the north face covent garden Expect excitement as A North schedule winds down
There are five teams that could win Class A North this year.
Starpoint was the heavy favorite going into Week 5. Following a 33 7 loss to Grand Island, reclaiming the regular season title for the third straight year became a little tougher.
Starpoint is atop A North at 4 1. Behind the Spartans are Grand Island, Williamsville East, Williamsville South and Sweet Home, all at 3 1 in league play.
With two games left in the regular season, winning league games becomes more important to battles for seeding in sectionals. Starpoint faces off against Will. South today. A win potentially seals a third title,
while a loss gives the Billies two wins against division favorites (Starpoint and Grand Island) and could drop the Spartans as low as a fourth or fifth depending on the other outcomes.
Grand Island faces an athletic Sweet Home team. A win keeps the Vikings in the top two, presumably.
In Class A South, there’s not as much parity. West Seneca West and South Park both 4 0 lead with the Indians ahead on points. W. Sen. East is third at 3 1.
Because of that parity, Grand Island’s upset of Starpoint last week looms large. Instead of the Spartans having a chance to clinch the top seed and home field advantage with a win this week, they still could miss the playoffs.
Still, the local duo control their own destinies. Starpoint will lock up a playoff seed with a win tonight,
and Grand Island plays Will. East next week. South and Sweet Home are also scheduled to face off in their final game. Starpoint closes its season with a non league rivalry game against Lockport.
